Chapter 6: Diminishing Away

As Tim opened his eyes, he found himself in a strange hotel room. The events of the previous night came flooding back to him, and he knew he was in grave danger. His heart pounded as he scrambled off the bed and onto the floor, his body shaking with fear.

He heard a groan from the bed, and quickly looked over his shoulder to see his step-mom stirring awake. She sat up, squinting at him through bleary eyes, and he could see the menace lurking beneath her hungover exterior. "Morning, sweetheart," she slurred, her voice thick with venom. "Ready for another day of fun?"

Tim swallowed hard, trying to keep the fear from showing on his face. He knew he had to get out of there, but he also knew the consequences of disobeying her. She had made it clear that there would be terrible punishments if he tried to run again.

Reluctantly, he climbed back onto the bed and tried to act as normal as possible, hoping she wouldn't notice his trembling hands or the terror in his eyes. But as they got dressed and prepared to leave the hotel room, he could feel her gaze boring into him, the threat of her wrath looming large over him like a giant shadow.

As they walked through the lobby of the hotel, Tim knew this was his last chance to escape. He had to act fast and make his move before they reached the car. He bided his time, pretending to be interested in some tourist brochures while his step-mom talked on her cell phone. And then, when the moment was right, he made a break for it.

Dashing through the lobby, he leapt over a couch and dove behind a planter. He could feel his heart pounding in his chest as he watched his step-mom's furious face grow smaller in the distance. For a moment, he thought he had actually done it—escaped her clutches. But he knew better than to let his guard down.

Tim spent the next few hours hiding out in the city, trying to figure out his next move. He knew he couldn't stay hidden forever, but he also knew he couldn't face his step-mom alone. He needed help, and he needed it fast.

That's when he saw her—a young woman named Megan, walking home from work with a pair of shoes dangling from her fingers. Tim approached her cautiously, his heart pounding in his chest. "Excuse me, miss?" he said timidly. "I, uh...I need your help."

Megan looked up at him, her gentle eyes filled with surprise. "Of course, sweetie," she said, setting down her shoes and kneeling in front of him. "What can I do for you?"

For the first time in what felt like forever, Tim found himself in the presence of someone who didn't inspire fear or loathing. Someone who seemed genuinely kind and caring. And he knew, in that moment, that he had found his salvation.
