MantInTheHand - School Games: Chapter 1
It was always the same routine for Alex, the first-year student at Evergreen High School. Wake up early, eat breakfast, make sure his backpack was packed with everything he needed, and head off to school. Today was no different. He woke up with a pit in his stomach, nervous about his first day of school. He had transferred from a small, private school to the public Evergreen High School after his parents had decided that they couldn't afford the tuition anymore. Despite the nervousness, he got dressed in his cleanest outfit and prepared himself for the day ahead. As he ate his cereal, he glanced out the window at the clock tower looming over the school grounds. The tower struck eight, signaling the start of the school day, and sent a shiver down his spine. He finished off his breakfast and eagerly rushed out of the house, locking the door behind him. The cool autumn air greeted him as he walked down the sidewalk towards the school gates, his backpack bouncing up and down on his back. As he approached the gates, he could see other students filing in, some chatting animatedly, others walking with their heads bowed, lost in thought. Alex took a deep breath and pushed open the gates, stepping onto the hallowed grounds of Evergreen High School. The school grounds were vast, stretching out in all directions, with buildings of different shapes and sizes dotting the landscape. The main building loomed large in the distance, its imposing facade casting an ominous shadow over the rest of the school. Alex felt a twinge of fear as he made his way towards it, his heart pounding in his chest. The bell rang, signaling the start of the first period, and Alex hurried into his classroom, trying to find an empty seat. He was lucky enough to find one in the back row, where he could sit undisturbed and avoid the attention of his classmates. As he settled into his seat, he glanced around the classroom, taking in the faces of his new classmates. They were a diverse bunch, some looking curiously at him, while others were engrossed in their books or laptops, oblivious to their surroundings. The teacher walked into the classroom and began taking attendance, calling out each student's name. When it came to Alex, the teacher hesitated for a moment before looking at him suspiciously. "You must be the new kid," she said, looking him up and down. "I'm Ms. Johnson. You can call me Ms. J." She smiled warmly at him, trying to put him at ease. "Welcome to my class." She continued taking attendance as Alex tried to hide his nervousness. The first period flew by, and before he knew it, the bell rang again, signaling the start of the second period. Alex followed the crowd out of the classroom and down the hallway, trying to remember which room his next class was in. He eventually found his way to the right room and took a seat near the back. The teacher began discussing the syllabus, going over the topics they would be covering throughout the semester. Alex listened intently, taking notes whenever he could, but he couldn't shake the feeling of being an outsider, of not quite belonging. As the day wore on, Alex found himself drifting in and out of his classes, growing increasingly restless. He tried to make friends with some of his classmates, but they seemed to form their own groups quickly, leaving him feeling even more isolated. By the end of the day, Alex was exhausted, both physically and mentally. He trudged back home, his backpack feeling heavier with each step. As he walked up to his house, he sighed, wondering what tomorrow would bring. Despite his unease, he couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation, a curiosity about what high school life would hold for him. Would he ever fit in? Would he make any friends? Only time would tell.
