David awoke with a start, his heart pounding in his chest. He sat up quickly, sweat pouring down his face as he tried to catch his breath. It was just a dream, he told himself, just a dream. But the feeling of being overwhelmed lingered, refusing to dissipate. He wiped the sweat from his eyes and glanced around his small, dingy apartment, taking comfort in its familiarity. It was still early morning, the sun hadn't even begun to peek over the horizon, so he figured he had some time to kill before he had to start planning his next heist. He stood up slowly, stretching his muscles as he stepped towards the bathroom. A hot shower might help clear his mind, help him shake off the remnants of the nightmare. He turned on the water and stepped into the stall, closing his eyes as the steam began to rise around him. As the warm water cascaded over his body, he found himself thinking about the dream again. It had been so vivid, so real...he couldn't help but wonder what it meant. He tried to push the thoughts away, focusing instead on the feeling of the water against his skin. After a few minutes, he stepped out of the shower, towel-drying himself off briskly before getting dressed. He knew he had to get out of the apartment, get some fresh air, or else he was going to drive himself crazy. He grabbed his favorite leather jacket and slung it over his shoulder as he headed out the door. Maybe a walk along the pier would do the trick, he thought, anything to clear his mind. He didn't realize how right he was. Little did he know, his life was about to take an extraordinary turn.
