The sun was setting, casting a warm glow over the once busy college campus. The air was still and quiet, with only the occasional chirping of birds breaking the silence. It was the perfect time for Amelia to sneak back into her dorm room after a long day of studying. She was looking forward to some alone time, maybe order in some food and binge-watch her favorite show on Netflix. But as she unlocked the door, she didn't expect to find her roommate, Sarah, waiting for her.
"Hey, Amelia, can I talk to you?" Sarah asked, leaning against the doorframe. Amelia couldn't help but notice how tall she seemed, even in her pajamas. She was a volleyball player, and her height only added to her intimidating presence.
"Sure, what's up?" Amelia replied, trying to hide her unease. She knew something was off the moment she saw Sarah's serious expression.
"So, I need to talk to you about something really important," Sarah began, her voice low and urgent. "I think we should sit down." Her words sent a shiver down Amelia's spine. What could be so important that it required them to sit down?
Feeling a sense of dread, Amelia followed her roommate into their shared dorm room. Sarah shut the door behind them and turned to face her, looking more nervous than she'd ever seen her before. "Alright, what's going on?" Amelia asked, trying to keep her voice steady.Sarah took a deep breath, hesitating for a moment before speaking. "Remember that guy from the science fair last semester? The one who claimed he could shrink people?" she asked, her eyes wide with horror. "Well, it turns out he was telling the truth."
Amelia felt her heart stop. She remembered that day all too well – the strange man with the mysterious machine, and the feeling of being sucked into oblivion before waking up in a panic. She had never spoken to anyone about it, afraid they would think she was crazy. But now it seemed like her secret was out. "What are you talking about?" she managed to stutter.
"I found you," Sarah continued, her voice quivering. "You were the size of a mouse, wandering around our room. I tried to help you, but you just kept screaming and scratching at me. I couldn't take it anymore, so I called an exterminator." Tears began to well up in Sarah's eyes, and Amelia felt a chill run down her spine. "I'm so sorry, Amelia. I didn't know what else to do."
The realization hit Amelia like a ton of bricks. She had been shrunk. And her roommate thought she was nothing more than a pest. She felt a wave of nausea wash over her as she sank to the floor, her eyes welling up with tears. This couldn't be happening. It was too much to process.
